4. Vishnu on Garuda Nepal 17th-18th c. gilded copper 4 3/8" 11 cm |
Detail: 2 This charming depiction of Vishnu shows the god seated in lotus position on the elongated tail of his vehicle Garuda, rather as if seated on a comfortable couch. Garuda has his hands in the "namaste" gesture of adoration to his master. This is a very unusual depiction, not attested in any other sculpture that we know of, and shows the inventiveness of the 17th/18th c. sculptor who created this miniature idol. Detail: 1 |
