Painted Curtain Trunk
Detail: flaming jewels

An antique painted "curtain" trunk, so named because of the curtain design of the top of the trunk, imitating the lid design of early Yuan dynasty leather trunks. The design in this case is not functional but decorative. The actual lid allowing access to the interior is in the middle of the top surface, a so-called "nam go" or "sky-door". The front of the trunk features two Tri-ratnas, or triple gems, a common Buddhist religious motif.
