 Detail: view from left This three part Nepalese clay lamp, with cups on the top surface to hold oil and wicks, was used for household rituals, and most likely particularly for the festival of lights, "Diwali" or Tihar. It features a central elephant shown facing to the front, flanked by two dancing monkeys. The work of a Newar potter from the Kathmandu valley, this type of clay sculpture is an example a much neglected "minor art" of the Newars, often showing great inventiveness and lively depictions of deities and aspects of everyday life.
