When first purchased in Lhasa, it was assumed this little cover was a rare miniature version of the standard wooden covers. Upon examination it became clear that it is in fact the left side of a standard cover that was broken or damaged beyond the damage seen in the upper right. The remaining damaged section was cut off and the part to the right showing the border is a modern reconstruction. The motif of the two confronting birds at the bottom right (and top right) would have been at the center of the composition of the original cover. Detail: Back Detail: Detail of front |
